Port Forwarding on the Linksys Wireless G Router

These instructions assume you use a router to firewall your home network. In order for you to be able to access a machine on your home network from the outside world you will need to open the relevant port (e.g. 22 for ssh, 80 for http). To do this with the Linksys Wireless G Router follow these instructions:

  1. Open your router settings page (usually here or here.
  2. Select the “Applications and Games” tab
  3. Select the “Port Forwarding” sub tab
  4. For http enter the following settings:
    1. Application → http
    2. Port from → 80
    3. Protocol → Both
    4. IP Address → the IP address of your server computer (instructions to set this address on your server here)
    5. Port to → 80 (unless your webserver serves on another port number, typically the default will be 80)
    6. Tick the Enable box

To test that this worked, you will need to find the IP address that was allocated to you by your broadband provider. To find this, follow these instructions:

  1. Open your router settings page (usually here or here.
  2. Select the “Status” tab
  3. Look for IP Address under the “Internet” heading. This is your actual current IP address. (N.B. This will change periodically if your broadband provider uses DHCP to allocate IP addresses.)

Now open your web browser and enter that IP address. The front page of your website should now be available. If this happens port forwarding is working correctly. If your broadband provider does use DHCP you will have to get a URL and set up and use Dynamic DNS for you to continue accessing your computer in this way.
